COUNTYWIDE HAZMAT OPERATIONS GROUP (CHOG) HOLDS A PROPANE EMERGENCIES LEAK CONTROL AND FLARING EXERCISE

The Countywide HazMat Operations Group (CHOG), of which EMD is a part of, held a Propane Emergencies – Leak Control and Flaring exercise on Tuesday, June 30, 2021 at Corona Fire Department Training Center.

The exercise included a brief review of the physical and chemical properties of propane and the equipment used to control leaks and perform flaring operations. Hands-on drills incorporated use of propane A and B kits and the Red Dragon flare kit. Bonding and grounding of equipment was also integrated into the exercise rotation. More than (60) attendees participated in the exercise, including representatives from CAL FIRE/Riverside County Fire Department, Hazardous Materials Response Team; Chino Valley Independent Fire District City of Riverside Fire Department; Corona Fire Department; County of Riverside Emergency Management Department; Federal Bureau of Investigation; Hemet Fire Department; Riverside County Department of Environmental Health; Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Hazardous Device Team; Riverside Fire Department; and the 9th Civil Support Team.

CHOG is a multi-disciplinary, multi-agency collaboration between city/county hazmat teams, law enforcement, Environmental Health, and the Emergency Management Department within Riverside County. CHOG was formed in 2006 to enhance the ability to prepare for, prevent and jointly respond to terrorist attacks and other major disasters within Riverside County and the State of California. Since its inception, CHOG has proven to be successful on numerous incidents and continues to exhibit beneficial results amongst the participating agencies. CHOG is a project within the Homeland Security Grant Program (HSGP) as approved by the Anti-Terrorism Approval Authority (ATAA). Program Coordinator I Reyshawn Bobo serves as the grant administrator for CHOG and Emergency Management Program Supervisor Michelle Kelly holds the role of CHOG chairperson.

The mission of the Countywide HazMat Operations Group is to strengthen coordination and collaboration among CHOG members through trainings and exercises; enhancing capabilities to respond to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosive device threats and/or terrorist attacks.
