Certification

The certification program prepares emergency managers, public health workers, first responders, healthcare professionals, and community volunteers for working in the Department Operations Center (DOC) in the event of a major emergency in Riverside County.

The certification program has three levels to ensure basic competencies and knowledge in the areas of disaster response and coordination. The basic, intermediate, and advanced levels build on the foundation of the Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS), the National Incident Management System (NIMS), and the Incident Command System (ICS).

THREE EASY STEPS

  1. Find your level: Your certification level is determined by the role you may perform in the Department Operations Center (DOC) in the event of a disaster. The level of training needed is determined by your job title. Download the job titles chart to determine your certification level or contact us at [email protected].
  2. Take the classes: It is recommend to take the courses in the order suggested as each class builds upon the knowledge learned in the previous class. Most courses are offered online (links provided). These courses provide flexibility to move at your own pace, as well as selecting a convenient time and place. In-person training is also available. You may register for upcoming courses by visiting the training calendar.
  3. Send us your certs: Congratulations! Online FEMA courses will send email notifications within 72 hours of completion. Forward a copy of this email to EMD/Preparedness Division. Courses not taken through FEMA (such as electives, the Disaster Service Worker video, and the Basics of Epidemiology) will not provide an email notification. It is the responsibility of the student to provide a certificate or a screen shot of completion.

For classroom courses, send us a copy of the certificate. Some classroom courses (such as the Basic Level Combined Course) will not yield a training certificate. Please be sure to sign the course roster legibly at the beginning of the course to ensure credit is received.

All certificates, screenshots and confirmation emails must be sent to [email protected] or faxed to (951) 358-7105. Please make sure to keep records of all your certificates.
